Pierzynski's three-run homer off Matt Clement capped Chicago's first-inning outburst and sent a raucous, towel-waving crowd of 40,717 into delirium. (AP)

***I share Chicago's enthusiasm but "delirium" is a bit much.***

It was the first home postseason game won by the White Sox since 1959.

I'm fine with a little hyperbole here.

Boy, the Red Sox could be in a lottttttttttttttta trouble if the best they can offer is Clement. He had nothing.

I was very surprised that Contreras stuffed the Red Sox' offense, but stuff it he did. When you can limit Ortiz to a single and a double and keep Ramirez and Damon off the basepaths entirely, you've accomplished something.

Even more surprising given that Contreras was awful against Boston when he was a Yankee.

Good pitching beats good hitting, don't you know?

Caution: I was reminded again of the 1984 Cubs-Padres series. Cubs won the first game 13-1. Sutcliffe was the dominant ace, and he hit a home run, too, if I recall. Now that was delirium at Wrigley Field.

As a Red Sox fan, yesterday's game was scary. The team's pitching is worse than last year's.

Still, keeping last season's playoffs in mind, I haven't given up hope after one ugly game.

About 1984: I was hired during spring training by a paper in the Tribune chain. Tribune, as now, owned the Cubs. Tribune stock soared after the team won that series, to the delight of those of us who'd been buying the stock at a 20 percent discount. The price stayed high even though the Cubs lost the World Series.

The Cubs lost that series in 1984. The Padres won in 5 games and went on to lose to Detroit. The Cubs haven't been to the World Series since 1945 and haven't won a postseason series since 1908.

Actually, Wayne, the Padres won the 1984 NLCS. The Cubs won the first two games and were then swept. It was the Padres who then went on to lose to the unstoppable Detroit Tigers in the World Series.

This has got to be the understatement of the year. However, after nearly bailing out on the Sox in disgust when they went down 3-0 to the Yanks last year, I, too, am going to hang in there.

You're right, as usual, Matthew. Thanks for the correction.

Sorry, JJ. I started my post before yours appeared, but then paused a couple of minutes to look up exactly how many games the Cubs did win in that series.

It's very interesting that there could well be a historical parallel to the Red Sox-White Sox series in the '84 Cubs-Padres series. Thanks for bringing that up, JJ!

Even if there weren't one, though, after last year, no Red Sox fan should give up until the 27th out of the final game is made.

Oh, I was just being playful. I know we posted simultaneously; I was just looking for some props from Wayne, actually.

And my thanks to our esteemed moderator, who always is right. I'm baffled by how I missed your correction. And embarrassed that I didn't check the facts.

As much disdain as Matthew has shown for the Division Series, it has given the Cubs a postseason win in the time since 1908. They beat out the Braves in the 2003 NLDS 3-2. Otherwise, Steve Bartman would have just been another disappointed fan who didn't get to see the Cubs in the 2003 NLCS.
