Tim Wakefield's recent success in Boston has me wondering if he's the most *team*-successful knuckleball pitcher in recent memory.

I recall the Niekros and Charlie Hough, all of whom had comparable or superior *individual* careers -- but my recollection is that their teams often struggled to reach .500. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have contended for their division crown during at least seven or eight of Wakefield's ten-plus years in Boston.

I suppose I could pose this question on a baseball board and get an answer in statistics like team winning percentages -- which I could probably even look up myself -- but here I'm more interested in the judgment call that baseball-loving TCEs seem so good at: Has any other perennially-contending team thrown a knuckleballer out there every five days? (For now let's overlook Wakefield's short-lived visits to the bullpen.) I'm starting to think the Red Sox are unique in this category.

You may be right. Hoyt Wilhelm was probably the best knuckleballer, but he was primarily a reliever and played for too many different teams to have made a major impact on any one franchise's fortunes.

I think a case can be made for Wilbur Wood.
