Unfortunately, a lot of editors seem to think banning wordplay they've personally seen overused is an acceptable substitute for banning wordplay on people's names, period. (Memo to all sports editors, everywhere: If you thought of it, so did half your colleagues around the world. If it's a play on someone's name, it's been done. End of story.)

Leaving the question of when wordplay is acceptable at all for another day, wordplay on the names of individuals should never see print in newspapers.
