Spotted on the Tribune home page on July 27: "Cubs walk off with win. Jeromy Burnitz hit a two-out, full-count single to drive in his second walk-off run in three games as the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 Wednesday."
Walk-off single? What's next -- a walk-off squeeze bunt?
(Michael Miner, Chicago Reader)

I have to admit, the use of "walk-off" to describe anything other than a homer is annoying. It also dilutes the connotation of "walk-off," given that it has been attached exclusively to homers since Dennis Eckersley (a onetime Cub) coined the term.

We've covered this subject a little bit here.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's Phils-Cubs game saw a walk-off passed ball in the ninth inning.

Inspired, ESPN.com's "Baseball Tonight Extra" site has been discussing even more unusual "walk-off" wins for the past few days. Fans of extreme baseball minutiae would enjoy a browse.

So I'm willing to sanction this expanded definition of "walk-off" -- if only to highlight these nifty little bits of baseball arcana. I'll bet Eck could be persuaded to sign off somehow.

Wonder if Bob Walk ever gave up a bases-loaded walk-off walk.

Pretty good one, Oed! I'd insert a smiley emoticon, but emoticons are banned, as we know.

And on an unrelated trivia note, I heard this during yesterday's Royals-Red Sox telecast: Hall of Famer Jim Palmer never gave up a grand slam. That's a lot of years (19) to be pitching and not have given up a grand slam.

It's happened. Kyle Farnsworth (then a Cub) walked four straight in the bottom of the ninth at Busch in a 0-0 game. I would know, because I didn't stop ribbing the all the Cubs fans in our standing-room-only section until I was well out of sight of the stadium.

Also right up there with "walk-off this or that": the use of "rope" for "frozen rope."
