Does anyone know why the umpires rotate around the field clockwise in their assignments during a given series? For instance, the home-plate umpire in the first game of a series is the third-base umpire in the second game, and so on.

My father asked, and I didn't know. I've asked friends and people at work who are baseball savvy, and they didn't know.

It is kind of odd, given that the game moves counterclockwise around the diamond.

The main reason is to give the guy who works hardest one day (plate) the easiest job the next day (third base).

Such a simple and logical explanation. Thanks, Jeff.

Thanks, Jeff. I've also sent an e-mail to the World Umpires Association asking why. No response yet, and there may never be. But if I get one, I'll post it.
