Little bit country: West to umpire home at All-Star game (ESPN.com headline)

NEW YORK -- Joe West was selected Thursday to umpire behind the plate in next month's All-Star Game.

West, in his 28th major league season, was among 22 umpires who lost their jobs as part of a failed mass resignation strategy in September 1999, then was rehired in February 2002.

In a lawsuit, he was awarded back pay for the time he missed, a ruling the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review earlier this year.

West also worked the 1987 All-Star Game at Oakland, umpiring at third base. He will be joined at the July 12 game in Detroit by Tim Welke (first base), Eric Cooper (second base), Mike DiMuro (third base), C.B. Bucknor (left field) and Andy Fletcher (right field).

Welke, a Michigan native, umpired in the 1990 All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. The other four umpires will be working in an All-Star game for the first time.

The official scorers will be T.R. Sullivan of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Tom Gage of the Detroit News and Detroit Tigers scorer Chuck Klonke.


Can anyone explain the headline to me? I can't figure out what the hell "little bit country" means in this context.

I would think it's well past time for newspaper reporters to stop being "official scorers."

I've been following baseball for years, but I was unaware that there were umpires famous enough to have nicknames.

And Phillip, I agree. It's a bizarre practice. Though most of the time it doesn't matter, imagine a home pitcher having a potential no-hitter turn on whether a particular play is ruled a hit or an error. The conflict of interest for the reporter excited about a big story is too great.
