The Yankees are in last place, tied for the second-worst record in baseball after the first week of the season.

This is just a place marker for later in the season when they turn it all around, led by Randy Johnson.

I'll add that the Dodgers are hot now, but I predict they'll cool off during the road trip that begins tonight and play .550 ball in May.

OTOH, I don't see anyone in the NL West giving them a serious challenge.

We'll see how the Yankees do this week against the Devil Rays, Blue Jays and Rangers. After they face the bad, the competent and the mediocre in a one-week stretch, we'll have a much better picture.

It's worth remembering that the ONLY teams the Yankees have played so far this year are the Red Sox (defending champions) and Orioles (a much-improved lineup that is hotter now than it is likely to be all year [Brian Roberts is hitting like Barry Bonds right now]). So we can't glean much from that.

Judging from the tone of the coverage, I guess we'll see the World Series at RFK this fall.

Has Peter Angelos had a coronary yet?

A-Rod and the boys just needed me and Steinbrenner on their ass, is all.

Apparently, that is not all. Johnson lost again last night.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers came from six runs down to beat Milwaukee. One can only imagine what they'll be like with Jayson Werth, Eric Gagne, Brad Penny and Wilson Alvarez healthy. (Penny struck out nine and gave up five hits in six innings in a rehab start with Las Vegas Monday night.)

I generally try to avoid being proven wrong, but in this case I'd be pretty happy about it.

*But all is not lost:*

If the Yankees can string together a few similar starts, they will not stay below .500 for long. -- NYT

Indeed. If things were different, they wouldn't be the same.

But seriously, the win over Toronto on Wednesday was solid both offensively and and defensively. Hopefully that's what was needed to end the skid.

Count on Steinbrenner to bring in another starter long before the all-star break. The Yankees have a few pitchers who, because of age and number of innings pitched, are fragile.

Of course, Johnson might still win 20 games this year. It's early.
