Mets Give Martínez a Whiff of First-and-Long -- NYT hed.

*Let's see: Martinez whiffed 12 in six innings, it was the first game of the season, and though the story doesn't say, maybe the game was rather long. Can anybody tell me what this hed is trying say?*

It could have been worse; Bartolo Colon could have been pitching.

Seeing the headline before reading the story i thought it might be a football reference: did Pedro throw at a batter, perhaps in the first inning, and then get tackled? no.
Or did the Mets get far behind in the first or second inning? Hmmm. Maybe.

After reading the story, my best guess of the headline's intent: In Pedro's first game, despite striking out 13, he didn't get the win because a reliever let a batter "go long"--hit a homer.

Not a good head in any way.

Obviously written by an anal-retentive copy editor.

When Martinez inevitably blows out his shoulder and is lost for two seasons, I wonder what that hed writer will have to say as the Mets pay Pedro guaranteed money for doing nothing,

From a BBC broadcast many years ago: "The bowler's Holding. The batsman's Willy.''

Hey Paul, do any of the star cricketers down there use steroids?

That would explain how they can score 100 runs in a game.

You're getting me off topic but I'll answer, with apologies to moderator. Shane Warne, the world's finest spin bowler, was suspended for a substantial time for ''accidentally '' breaching a medicines test. ............... television news reports that Adam Gilchrist, an outstanding Australian cricket batsmen, has been approached by a scout for the Red Sox. The secret to his success is timing and finesse rather than strength.

I for one think cricket should be fair game in this forum. The hoary ball-and-stick games whose demises are constantly predicted and exaggerated need to stick together.
