I found this piece about Canseco by Michael Chabon in the NY Times today fascinating. He uses the word "contumely."

I always have to look that one up, JJ. Have you read any Chabon? His *Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay* is terrific. At some point I'll have to get his latest, *The Final Solution: A Story of Detection.* (It's a children's mystery and has nothing to do with the Holocaust.)

I've spent years searching for a writer of my generation whom I can safely describe as better than Chabon -- and I've never even come close. He's the gold standard. Nice to have him in the NY Times once in a while.

(Perhaps someone who's seen Spider-Man 2 would have a different opinion, however.)

In a rare departure along the lines of my watching "Spring Break Shark Attack," I read "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" on vacation a few years ago. I liked it, but it read like an extended screen treatment -- which I later learned it was. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

What have you told us about watching TV?

I'm a trained professional. It's safe for me, while vacationing, to sample what the rabble watches.
