We've made it through another winter. As a Yankees fan, I've never been so fired up about the start of a new season. As awful as October was, it feels wonderful to be out for blood.

Let's hold off on the excitement until after the NCAA Tournament.

I won't get excited until March 3.

I wish I could cultivate a taste for basketball. It would give me something to do for the week between the Super Bowl and pitchers and catchers.

But it's just too high-scoring for me.

I don't care to watch a 48-minute slam-dunk/distance-shooting contest.

"Grandpa, did you like basketball when you were my age?"

"Yes, m'boy, I did. But they played it differently in those days. They had something called 'passing,' and you weren't allowed to run without dribbling the ball."

The odd part is, the average game had more scoring in those days. I attribute this to higher-percentage shots.

For the record, college games are 40 minutes.

I've still got about 10 days to go, but I'm just as excited, especially since the chance that my Blues will play hockey anytime soon are slim to none, and slim just left town.

But I will wait for March Madness, though my team has already shown it won't be around for the Big Dance.

March Madness is what makes March tolerable!

I'm not much of a fan, but I play the pool, so I watch. :-)

I enjoyed the newsroom pool until I very nearly won one year, and realized that knowing the game is not a prerequisite to success. Then I decided that it wasn't skillful enough to be worth my time.

At a former workplace, there was an NFL pool in which participants ranked their picks from 1-14 (it was a long time ago) according to how sure they were. If you were certain Washington would beat San Francisco, for example, you gave that one a 14, and so on. The pool's winner was he or she whose rankings added up to the highest total on Monday.

I'd study the stats in the SF Chron before making my picks, and invariably get 12 or 13 of the 14 games — but I'd blow a 12 or a 13, while somebody who picked winners based on the color of their uniforms or something would walk away with it.

Which is why I don't go to Vegas, either.
