A New York *Times* editorial rips Arte Moreno and the Angels for their attempt to change the name of the team to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

But the editorial includes this line:

"If [the name change] requires a bit of geographic Dadaism - changing their name but not moving, and adding not one but two bilingual redundancies - then so be it."

I get at least one bilingual redundancy--"Los Angeles" and "Angels." What's the other one the *Times* is referring to?

"The" and "Los"?

That would be it. Is anybody bothered by either of them? They don't seem jarring to my anglo ears, but I wonder if "the Los Angeles Angels" sounds ridiculous to someone whose native tongue is Spanish.

Ah, thanks, Wayne. Of course--I should have seen it.

Across the street from the Palm Beach Post in West PB, Fla., is a vile bar known as The El Cid. Twenty years ago it was frequented at night only by bikers, postal workers and copy editors. On the same block were The El Cid dental office, The El Cid barbershop and The El Cid beauty salon.

I never heard a biker or mail carrier complain about the redundancy.

In college, I wrote some ad copy for a sandwich shop frequented by the newspaper staff. Part of it read, "A french dip sandwich with au jus — great when under deadline pressure, or anytime."

The paper's adviser, who apparently knew a little French, enlightened me as to my faux pas.

Apparently, Arby's hasn't gotten that memo, as they still sell their "Giant Roast Beef" with "au jus sauce."

The announcer's full quote, I think, was "Get a giant roast beef with au jus sauce for only $3.49!"
