No, we won't be calling them "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim."

ESPN has some writer who insists on calling every sports team by the name of the city it's actually in, and never by any other geographic name. E.g., he refers to the "St. Petersburg Devil Rays," the "City of Tampa Buccaneers," the "Phoenix Diamondbacks," the "East Rutherford Giants," and so forth.

If the Angels want to call themselves the Los Angeles Angels, let them, but "the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" is so pathetic I'm embarrassed for them.

For many years, I was unaware of Anaheim's geographic proximity to Los Angeles -- I was under the impression it was somewhere between Los Angeles and San Fransisco. The same is true for the San Jose Sharks. I hope someone gets a clue and finally changes the name to the Los Angeles Angels.

In sports, it's never good to use the actual city in your team's name if it's not a major metropolitan area. Yes, if you want to see the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, you have to drive about 30 minutes on Interstate 275 to St. Petersburg, but everyone knows where Tampa Bay is.

Hell, if we're going to follow the Angels' logic, then they'd have to be the "New York Jets of East Rutherford, N.J."

Sigh.

They once were the Los Angeles Angels. Of course, they actually played in Los Angeles then.

They also were the California Angels for a little bit, I think.

As a long-time Dodgers fan, I'm getting a very snarky laugh out of this.
