I read some copy today about the world series kicking off this weekend. Have you folk changed the rules?

It's an unfortunate metaphor that gets used in every context, but it surely should be confined to football.
At the very least, if one MUST use it outside the context of football, don't use in reference to other sports.

Is it just me, or does it seem like "kick off" (as in "kick off the season") isn't so often used in reference to football? Too cliche, I suppose.
When they throw out the first pitch of the Super Bowl, we'll all have learned something.

My favorite (and, apparently, the AP's as well) is using "kick off" in political references: campaigns, stumping, events, etc.
I've made sure to ban it from all stories I read that don't actually involve kicking off something.
