I haven't been following the story closely, so perhaps this question has been addressed in the media. Is there popular support in D.C. for a baseball team? My assumption is that many residents are transplants whose baseball loyalites lie elsewhere.

Heh. Loyalties. Good one.
I think the more pertinent question is: Is there support for two teams?

I spoke to a few Washingtonians about this when I spent the summer there a couple years ago. The general sentiment I picked up was that they felt like hostages to Peter Angelos and would gladly switch away from the Orioles at the first opportunity.
But only time will tell.

I don't pretend to have my finger on the pulse of Washintonians, but I can state authoritatively that the Orioles are not considered a local team. It's a major production to go to Baltimore to see a game.

That might speak for Washingtonians but not necessarily the folks in between D.C. and Baltimore. You know, the real people.
I remember going to an Orioles game during my summer in D.C. and it not being a major production.

Has anyone talked about a name for the ball club, or is it too early for that?

No name for the team has been chosen yet, though there is some sentiment to go with the Senators for a third time. -- NYT

quote:
Has anyone talked about a name for the ball club, or is it too early for that?

According to ESPN, the most popular choice was the Washington Grays, after a negro league team that played there in the '30s and '40s. ESPN says they doubt the Rangers will give up the Senators' naming rights.
When I heard about the move, I didn't even consider that it would make Washington a two-team town, and I still don't think of it that way.
In other news, did anyone see the final game at Olympic Stadium last night? Attendance: 31,425. They held up signs reading "Don't go, Expos" and took pieces of the park with them after the game was over. Nice to see their support after years of threatening to move the team.
