A lawyer for Steven Williams, 26, of Pacifica, Calif., said yesterday that his client was being sued by Timothy Murphy, who claims he is the rightful owner of the ball that Bonds hit [for No. 700] on Sept. 17. According to the suit, Murphy claims he "established possession, dominion and control over the ball by sitting on it and securing it with his right leg." Murphy will ask for a restraining order in San Francisco Superior Court today to prevent Williams from selling the ball.

How much could it possibly be worth?

In this whacked-out, symbol-worshipping market? I'd guess several thousand easily.
It looks like we're gonna have this kind of thing every time there's a "historic" hit. And if the definition of "historic" continues to narrow, we could see a riot and a class-action suit over Albert Pujols' 921st career base hit.
[ September 28, 2004: Message edited by: Oeditpus Rex ]

To put it in perspective, Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball sold for $3 million in January 1999, and the same man who bought that ball also ponied up $450,000 for Bonds' 73rd home run ball. Seeing as he's only the third player to hit that many (although he was only the third player to hit 661, 662, 663 etc.) that should provide for a jump in his 700th home run ball's price.

The "Bartman Ball" sold for $113,824. Then it was blown up in a public ceremony.
They should have blown up the team and kept the ball

Not that it matters to this forum but just for the hell of it, the aforementioned litigant Timothy Murphy lives in my town.

Originally, the winning bid was more than $820,000. But after an internal investigation, Overstock discarded the top bids as pranks, leaving the person who used the screen name “Bomasterj” the winner. At press time, Overstock was not releasing the winner’s name because of privacy issues.
“The bids are legally binding contracts,” MacDonald-Korth said. “But we didn’t want to make a big deal over it because it was such a high profile bid. We didn’t want anyone to lose their homes over it.”
Hollister Free Lance -- Bonds' ball nets $804k
