But the ultimate goal remains George Sisler's record of 257 hits in a season, set in 1920. Suzuki fell 15 hits short of that record as a rookie. If he plays in all of the Mariners' remaining games and maintains his pace, he will break Sisler's record by one hit. -- NYT
*I hope you cynics can get excited by Suzuki's pursuit of this record, which has stood much longer than Ruth's or Maris's (or McGwire's, for sure) single-season home-run record. Has any baseball record that stood for 80+ years ever been broken?*

That's an excellent point about foul balls not counting as strikes. Like a good copy editor, I did some fact checking. You are right, except that the rules in the late 1890s did count foul tips and foul bunts as strikes.

It is an interesting pursuit. It's too bad it's being carried out 3,000 miles away from me for the most part.
How he hits while he's running to first base, I'll never know.
And even though he's a lefthanded hitter, he's hitting much better against lefthanders than he is against righthanders.

I'm not the author of that nugget. It's from baseballlibrary.com.

Will there be an asterisk, or are we beyond that?

If a cyborg such as Barry Bonds is allowed to hold records, Major League Baseball is well past the asterisk era.
