Red Sox Keep Pace in AL East<p>... but where was I when they started talking about "pennant races" in May? |

Any baseball team can get "buried" in the standings as easily in April or May as in August or September--just look at the Seattle Mariners, whose season is almost effectively over before Memorial Day. |

But it's only relatively recently that we have seen daily news stories in May tracking standings. |

It is not just hype when sportswriters talk about the Sox-Yankees rivalry being more intense this season. It really is at a new level. And I think that explains it. |
