His linguistic skills inspired this observation by a teammate: "He can speak seven languages, but he can't hit in any of them."<p>Heh. Reminds me of the Hearst Washington correspondent in the 1970s of whom it was said, "He is fluent in five languages. Unfortunately, none of them is English." |

Thanks, Oed. I recommend the Dawidoff book. It's highly entertaining. Berg was a pretty fascinating, eccentric guy. How he managed to keep a major-league job despite abjectly meager statistics is amazing in itself. |
