Cubs left fielder Moises Alou recently disclosed that he urinates on his hands to toughen them up. According to manager Dusty Baker, it's a tradition among some Latin American players. Defending the practice, Alou explained that urine "is just like water." Alou didn't get into specifics (thank goodness), but he said other Cubs do the same thing, though no one is admitting it. Sammy Sosa said he's not going to high-five Alou anymore. Anyone have a baseball story to top this one for weirdness? (I don't even think the Yankees' wife-swapping in the '70s is as strange.)

If urine is just like water, why not use water?
As for strange baseball stories, I nominate Doc Ellis's pitching a no-hitter on acid.
[ May 10, 2004: Message edited by: ADKbrown ]

Urine is highly acidic. Many pitchers have used pickle brine, which also is highly acidic, to ward off blisters; Nolan Ryan was the first I know of.
Still ...

Yes! It's a one-source story (Dock himself), but the folks at Urban Legends are eager to believe it. He did enough other outrageous things at stadiums and on the mound that it's plausible.
Summary: He says he took acid in late morning at home in LA, believing that his team (the Pirates) had the day off. At 1 p.m. his girlfriend read in paper that not only was the team to play that evening in San Diego but Dock was supposed to pitch. She rushed him to the airport, he got to the stadium, he pitched the no-hitter -- with a pile of walks and a hit batter.
If memory serves correctly, he put in time as a pitching coach. Would love to have heard him discussing training and conditioning with his players.
[ May 10, 2004: Message edited by: Wayne Countryman ]
