As for strange baseball stories, I nominate Doc Ellis's pitching a no-hitter on acid.

Yes! It's a one-source story (Dock himself), but the folks at
Urban Legends are eager to believe it. He did enough other outrageous things at stadiums and on the mound that it's plausible.
Summary: He says he took acid in late morning at home in LA, believing that his team (the Pirates) had the day off. At 1 p.m. his girlfriend read in paper that not only was the team to play that evening in San Diego but Dock was supposed to pitch. She rushed him to the airport, he got to the stadium, he pitched the no-hitter -- with a pile of walks and a hit batter.
If memory serves correctly, he put in time as a pitching coach. Would love to have heard him discussing training and conditioning with his players.
[ May 10, 2004: Message edited by: Wayne Countryman ]
