That's absolutely vicious, and I'm ashamed of myself for having so much fun with it.
Longest so far: 320.5 feet. But, hey -- it's only BP pitching.

The Hawks: Andre Dawson and Ken Harrelson
Robin Yount

Forgot about the Hawks. Of course.
My lasting memory of Dawson is of an at-bat he took against Eric Show of the Padres, I believe, at Wrigley. Show hit him in the face, and Dawson went down for a minute. Then he got up and charged the mound, bat in hand, leaving most of his face on home plate. I don't think it went particularly too well for Mr. Show after that.
Robin is a good example too.
[ January 30, 2004: Message edited by: wordygurdy ]

It's a deriviative of "Duck Butt," which he picked up as a young'un because his glutes were thought of as being rather high.
And let's not forget Barry LARKin.
Anyway, for long-penguin fans, here's the same game on steroids: Smack the Penguin. Shots of more than 500 feet are typical. (I've gone 588.3.)
[ January 31, 2004: Message edited by: Oeditpus Rex ]

Great Caesar's Ghost! How could I have forgotten Goose Gossage or Goose Goslin? [Smacking myself in forehead]

"Ducky" Medwick, Hall of Famer with Cards' Gashouse Gang.
Phil "The Vulture" Regan, big-time reliever in 1960s.
Frank "The Crow" Crosetti, longtime player and coach.
Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, colorful Tigers pitcher who burned out young.
"Birdie" Tebbets, longtime player, coach and manager.
"Chick" Gandil, leader of the Chicago Black Sox; other players have had the nickname.
Fred "The Chicken" Stanley, weak-hitting Yankee shortstop.
Must be someone nicknamed "Eagle" or "Eagle Eye," but can't think of one.
[My favorite baseball nickname is "Death to Flying Things," given to fielders with great range in the 19th century. This referred to the ball, not birds, though.]

Can you imagine another player or a fan calling to Juan Marichal, "Hey, Dominican Dandy"?
(For some reason, that reminds me of when some papers -- and/or maybe some wire services -- changed Jesus Alou's name to Jay, because "there was only one Jesus.")

Are these more than 300-foot drives on the fly, or are they sliding that far?

Post subject: Re: penguin baseball

If you hit it more than about 150 feet in the air he does a beak plant. The shots are somewhat humpbacked line drives, which slide a good 100 feet or more. As in the real thing, timing is everything.
