Does Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon need a copy editor for his lineup cards?

A legion of out-of-work newspapermen and women might be happy to apply, but pitcher Andy Sonnanstine ensured on Sunday that Maddon's pregame mistake wouldn't turn into a Roberto de Vincenzo at The Masters-type slipup.

In case you didn't see it on Yahoo! Sports Minute, Sonnanstine was forced to hit third in the Rays' lineup against Cleveland after Maddon pencilled in both Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist at third base for the game. Maddon actually meant to write 'DH' next to Longoria's name, but he couldn't go back and rectify the error. Under baseball's rules, the Rays lost the rights to their designated hitter and had to bat Sonnanstine in Longoria's usual third spot. It was the first time since 1968 that any pitcher in either league hit in a batting position higher than seventh.

Neither that story nor the Tampa Tribune story it links to gives the result of the game. How hard is it to say "Oh, and the Rays won"?

I especially liked the link to a 13-minute video of a game delay.

How many baseball fans know what "a Roberto de Vincenzo at The Masters-type slipup" is? (With or without punctuation.)

I doubt many would know about de Vincenzo. Perhaps the majority of them hadn't been born when that happened. The majority might not even care about golf.

But, to give the writer a partial break:
At least the online version allows readers who are curious to click a link to find out.
And, that local market is full of elderly golf fans.

Still a bad idea.

This is happening more often. A sidebar has space to give the result in a few words -- and should.

Now that I look at it, that's a blog post, so anyone who sees it will have the link available. Me, I don't have a problem with that sort of name-checking in a blog post or other Web doc with the proper link.
