I still refuse to recognize any league that doesn't make pitchers bat.

I am suspending my near-legendary hatred of professional sports to root for my childhood heroes, the Philadelphia Phillies.

I was disappointed, however, to see that all the players from the 1960 team seem to have retired. How could anyone not love these guys?

(Jimmie Coker was my mother's first cousin, BTW.)

Maybe Wayne can arrange a Camp David summit between Bumf and Ron Blomberg so we can all put that '70s rancor behind.

(That's worth a click on the link just to find out the title of Blomberg's autobiography.)

Also, that list contains one of the answers to a stoopit trivia question: Who are the two major league players who played for teams that had the same name as their surname?

Answer: Dave Philley of the Phillies and Johnny Podres of the Padres.

I guess it works if you don't care about spelling.

Except for Jamie Moyer. Poor Jamie. I have transferred all my Roger Clemens hopes and dreams onto Moyer, my age cohort. And while I like to think that if he's still pitching then theoretically I could still be pitching, I bet the grizzled veteran's back aches about as much as mine does this morning. When some punk half your age clears the bases against you in the first inning, all you can do is hope for a Game 6 or 7.

Yeah, JJ, I had to feel for him. It's even more amazing when you think that he's not some guy throwing a 50 mph knuckleball up there on 75 percent of his pitches. You could just see the "Well, I guess this is the end" look in his eyes. The difference nowadays, though, is that he doesn't have the steel mill or the cornfield to look forward to when he retires.

That's funny about Blomberg. I remember that he was making a big deal of it while he was playing. As for the roster, please note that the Joe Morgan listed is not the same Joe Morgan who later played for the Reds and Phillies and is the greatest second baseman who ever lived. And as for the DH, no, I won't get over it. The game was much better when pitchers batted. I pitched three innings in high school in 1968 and I had to bat, and the results were about as bad as when I batted while playing first base.

It's sad to look down that list and realize how many of them are gone, not just retired. Chris Short, of course, suffered the most tragic end.

If Blomberg were to show up with a bat, our annoyed Bumf might be tempted to use it on the original DH. The world is better off with Bumf wielding his fiddle and racing forms.

Too bad Daryl Boston never played for the Red Sox.
