Is there a difference between nonprofit and not-for-profit? I tend to think nonprofit is misleading, because not-for-profit organizations can earn all the money they like. It seems that nonprofit implies just that: no profit.
Thoughts?

I concur, and my former paper adopted "not-for-profit" as style, for the reasons you state.

The terms are interchangeable, and "nonprofit" is generally preferred. A nonprofit can make all the money it wants. There are restrictions on what can be done with it.
[ June 26, 2004: Message edited by: blanp ]

Is there a reason nonprofit is preferred, aside from it being the shorter of the two?

Plus the dictionary gives a definition of "nonprofit" as "not intended to make a profit," i.e., a not-for-profit operation.
