Thanks, Bill, for providing the link to the "Newseum," and thus making it impossible for me to continue my boycott of it.
One of the more puzzling heds is Detroit's:
REAGAN DIES, BROUGHT
HOPE BACK TO AMERICA
It's curiously punctuated and seems more like a seven-word editorial.
My absolute favorite is Calgary's:
DID THE PUCK GO IN?
Also curious: Even though the demise was announced in plenty of time for papers to break their front pages, note that a bunch of them still went with whatever packages they had planned and shoehorned the death of a former president around it. A particularly egregious example of this is Culpeper.
In defense of the places that did this, my guess is they are so understaffed that they can't even make an attempt to play up a breaking news story once the page is "designed."

Yeah, Culpeper, if I'm not mistaken, has one copy editor/paginator, give or take one.

We old-timers tend to forget, (until a fully adult intern shows up looking like someone your daughter might baby-sit), that many people now working were in elementary school when Reagan left office and, not having achieved 30 themselves, might not see much significance in the prospect of the first state funeral of a president in 30 years. If Saturday duty is left to the least senior editor, the odds of having someone downplaying the death are higher still.

That's why one reads history. In 1987, being the youngest on the desk at 27, I was expected to know about 1967 for just this reason.
