STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) _ Investigators continued to search Sunday for a suspect in the slaying of a city police officer, who was found shot inside his cruiser in a shopping center parking lot in what was described as an execution-style killing.
... Police said a man fired a shotgun at him from another vehicle...<p>When was the last time anyone was executed from a car? Whose execution style IS that?

I don't know. Is there an "Execution Style Guide"?

I hate to take issue, but that is SO narrow. What about hangings and firing squads. Or guillotines - although they are not as portable.

There's an argument to be made that the writer/editor who did this was well aware of the problem with using the phrase because they qualified it with "what was described as" instead of just calling it an execution-style killing. Granted, the person who actually described it that way, thus necessitating the statement at all, could benefit from a common-sense kick up the ass, but still...

Why is it so difficult to understand that when someone says something stupid, we don't have to put it in the paper?

I just thought it was ridiculous. Why would the reporter even include that in the story? We used the story as a brief, and, unfortunately, I didn't point out the ridiculous nature of the statement to the desk. I didn't edit it, and it got through.

This is why the resident grammarian here tells us we shouldn't use execution-style to describe how a person was killed. It gets to be ridiculous....executed from a car?
