Original sentence about very young students in a science class, who put leaves and grass and maybe part of a soda can in small clear plastic jars and watch how the items decay -- or don't decay -- over time: "They put items in clear plastic jars to learn about how they decay"<p>Edited sentence:
"They watch items decay in plastic jars."<p>Admittedly, the first sentence needs work but I think the second sentence loses the point, even though it's shorter and tighter. TCE comments?

Worse, for the reasons you state.<p>I would propose:<p>"They put items in plastic jars to observe how they decay."
