A younger generation of war veterans swept into town yesterday, shifting the tone of the city's Memorial Day celebrations from the long-ago heroism of World War II to the still-raw wounds of Vietnam. (Washington Post)
***"But wait!" I hear you cry. "You can 'celebrate' sad things too! Just look in the dictionary!"***
[ May 31, 2004: Message edited by: blanp ]

"Celebrate" is easier to spell than "commemorate." Though not "honor" or "observe."

As a son of a World War II RAF veteran, I find the use of the word celebrate in this context offensive. Contemporaries of my late father share this view.
They went. They served. They mourn the death of civilians and feel for thier foes . Not the best years of their lives.
