I believe the crossed sabers on the hat indicate he's a member of a mechanized cavalry unit. If so, then perhaps the hat is an attempt to "modernize" the hat worn by mounted cavalry in the 19th century. <p>Not of this means the hat isn't a bad idea, of course.
