As documented in the book (not movie) "Ragtime," for one season in the teens the New York Giants had a guy named Charlie Faust as their mascot. Faust was, according to contemporary accounts, "feeble-minded" and used to throw imaginary pitches on the sidelines during the game. The last day of the season, he was actually allowed to pitch an inning in a real major league game, though of course it was all done as a joke and made into a farce.
The novelty wore off, and Faust eventually was sent packing and wound up being commited.
According to the fascinating site www.thedeadballera.com , the New York Herald's headline on the story of Faust being hospitalized was:
FAUST SENT TO BUGHOUSE LEAGUE
