On page A15 of today's edition of the nation's "newspaper of record," John Kifner and Christine Hauser tell us that the population of Falluja is 200,000, whereas Eric Schmitt says it's about 300,000.
Why didn't these reporters, or their editor, emulate the professionalism of the BBC by checking www.world-gazetteer.com and using its Falluja population figure of 284,500?
Is it any wonder that the Jayson Blair scandal happened in the pages of the Gray Lady?

Mr. Sheehan, since I believe in original sin, I agree that Jayson Blair is everywhere.
I've drawn the attention of Daniel Okrent, the public editor of The New York Times, to this thread.

Mr. Okrent thanked me and expressed the hope that the foreign desk would decide on a number for Falluja's population.

Steve, as they say over in Red Hook (at least they did last time I was there): "You got the juice."

Well, I'd take about 1000 off that number given the killings of insurgents and innocent civilians. U.S. forces have fired on ambulances and unarmed civilians, according to one indepedent eyewitnesss.

Excellent advice. But here's a caveat: Places such as Sydney - as the three main NSW cities move spread out towards each other - have fuzzy geographical borders that make population a matter of definition.
[ April 25, 2004: Message edited by: Paul Wiggins ]
