Can you really "suddenly retire"?

Yes, and I hear that most people who do so retire to Costa Rica, where it never snows.

Perhaps the person who posts the photos with the Web stories for the Washington Post is ready for a sudden retirment.

The Post changed the story it links to. It had linked to an AP dispatch that said Jurgensen "retired suddenly." without naming her in the lede (though Kelley was named in the lede).
As for retiring to Costa Rica, c´mon down. Erudite (even if testy) ex-copy editors will make a much needed improvement to the local expat community made up mostly of dirty old men, those with a penchant for ante-bellum atitudes looking for Latin flair and kidnappers on the lam. But not only does it never snow here, but we can surf and scuba dive year-round without needing a wetsuit.
