For too long, I've been confused by AP's style on "non-." It's rare that I've seen consistency in papers (See non-member/nonmember or non-farm/nonfarm). Can anyone help?
AP: "No hyphen when forming a compound that does not have special meaning and can be understood if not is used before the base word. Use a hyphen, however, before proper nouns or in awkward combinations, such as non-nuclear."
Does this imply eliminating the hyphen from everything but proper nouns or words that start with N?
[ April 18, 2004: Message edited by: ram280 ]

Well, not quite everything. I'm sure that there are other words to which adding an unhyphenated "non" prefix would produce the dreaded "awkward combination." I'm at a loss to think of one off the top of my head, however.

I'm at a loss to think of one that wouldn't be awkward. What's next, "email"?
I don't understand this rule at all.
