I'm curious about how other newspapers dole out vacation time.
The company I work for "awards" half of your vacation time on March 15 and half on Aug. 15. You can use vacation time before it's awarded, but if you quit and have used vacation time, the money comes out of your final check. However, if you quit and have vacation time in hand, it's not added to your last check.
It seems to me that we should earn vacation time as we work and not wait for the corporate royalty to bestow it upon us.
Any thoughts?

I would take it up with my shop steward. Oh. Wait.
Any company with a draconian policy like that can't be reasoned with. Under such circumstances, I would advise someone leaving the paper to give his notice the day after vacation.

I recall joining a paper on Jan. 2 and asking for vacation around October. I was told I couldn't have any because I had not been on staff at the first of the year [Jan. 1 is a statutory holiday for gosh sakes, even if I had been on staff then I probably wouldn't have worked it.]. THEN - and here is where it gets truly nasty - I was called into the office on Dec. 27 and told I had two weeks vacation coming but I couldn't carry them over to the following year. It was a non-union paper at the time, but it was a Guild one before I left.

Vacation accrues at my newspaper with each paycheck. It depends on seniority, but I believe the range is from 3 to 6 hours accrual per paycheck.
Gatekeeper
-30-
