from mediabistro's jim romenesko knock-off:
/--------- mediabistro.com 1-day workshop --------\
COPY EDITOR, HEAL THYSELF
***Workshops in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, D.C., and Seattle***
Learn how to solve language problems with confidence, how to win writers and editors to your side, why a one-size-fits-all-writers approach to copy doesn't work, and much, much more in this full-day workshop.
**what tells me this is taught by a writer who has never edited? by a reporter who refers to editors as 'rim chimps'? by a journalist who's never thanked an editor for saving his sorry ass? **
sorry, just had to get that off my chest. as you were.

The workshop is legitimate and the presenters are obviously qualified. I do note that the fee is a little steep; three people will probably get to go to the Testy Copy Editors International Conference for that kind of money.

i'm all for editing workshops, but something about that 'one size fits all' just bothered me. no copy editor i know (who's any good) approaches every writer the same way.
i think that's one of the qualities that distinguishes an average editor from a good one. some writers need a heavy edit for everything from grammar to sentence casting; some can't put two words together to save their lives but are great reporters; some write and write and write but can't find the news if you lead them to it, and a good copy editor knows how to handle them all and leave the copy clean but still reading like the person that wrote it.

But doesn't it say why a one-size-fits-all approach DOESN'T work?
