From our friends at AP:<p>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Research showing that bald mice can grow hair after being implanted with a type of stem cell could lead to a cure for baldness, a group of scientists says.<p>Hmm. Is baldness "cured," as if it were a disease? I'm erring on the side of caution, eliminating "cured" and writing around it.

I'd hope a male copy editor would pause at a story about "curing menopause." Strikes me about as silly.

Pause, no. Roll about the floor laughing at the idiocy involved, yes.

All women who live long enough eventually experience menopause, whereas baldness is not universal among men. Furthermore, there is no biological need for baldness. I think that makes the latter more of a "disease."<p>A few minutes of reflection on the question have led me to the conclusion that "cure for baldness" is a reasonable usage.<p>[ March 14, 2004: Message edited by: Matthew Grieco ]</p>

I don't want every bald subscriber calling my boss to bitch about it tomorrow. (One week until Las Vegas, one week until Las Vegas...)

How about "reverse" baldness instead of "cure"? Or balding, perhaps.
