Just passing through
By Susan Lindt

Intelligencer Journal<p>If you've ever wondered what it's like to pass through a human colon, Lancaster is the only place in the state where you can find out this year. No, it's not the Rolling Stones or Cirque du Soleil, but a 40-foot-long replica of the human colon that's so spacious, you can actually "pass" right through it.<p>"I think it's going to be the colon event of the year in
Lancaster," said Ed Rish, practice administrator at Regional
Gastroenterology Associates of Lancaster, one of several groups
sponsoring the gargantuan colon's only tour stop in Pennsylvania
this year.

I remember seeing the wire story on that a few years ago and asking myself exactly the same question as I reached for the delete key.

I'm still trying to figure out why the story needs to explain that a 40-foot colon replica is not the Rolling Stones. (Although it is helpful to know that a Rolling Stones show would not be Lancaster's "colon event of the year," apparently.)

I'm finding it difficult to resist thinking of the old SNL ad for a cereal called Colon Blow.<p>Anyway, didn't we learn in J-101 to stay very far away from "If you've ever wondered" ledes? Especially this one.

I would have thought there would have been dozens of people in the world who would have wondered about this. Nonsense I hear you say. Would you believe two or three?<p>[ February 24, 2004: Message edited by: Paul Wiggins ]</p>

I think the giant colon has great educational potential and it's something I would consider visiting with an inquisitive child. But there is of course no reason for writing stupidly about it.

This is a joke, right? It reads like something The Onion would run.

I am laughing my head off just thinking of John Belushi or Bill Murray doing a skit like that! And either one would be completely deadpan during the skit, of course.
