I don't wish to commit the sin of being anti-testy, but I don't think this lede is off-base. It's overdone as of late, but as a concerned Democrat myself I don't think it is inappropriate to use the word "soul" here. I think it's a pretty good description of what's going on. Some elections are far more important than others, and I think this is one of the pivotal ones.
