Thanks to Romenesko's letters page for bringing to our attention this Stuff magazine article, which nicely summarizes the automatic seasonal stories we should avoid running but will not. (Stuff is not on my usual reading rotation.)

How on earth did they miss Remembrance Day? Particularly when November has so little else to recommend it. (at least in Canada, where we do Thanksgiving in October).

That was a wonderful article. Thanks for the link.<p>My paper, to fulfill a corporate mandate, is in the process of compiling a "Moments of Life calendar" -- a listing of when Typical Readers might be expected to prepare for weddings, getting kids into college, winterizing their homes, etc., etc., with the idea that this "calendar" will play a part in story planning. I'd love to offer the Stuff article to the higher-ups as an example of the "Moments of Life" topics we should die before writing about ... but it'd probably be my last official act as an employee there.
