United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has won Plain English Campaign's annual 'Foot in Mouth' award for the most baffling statement by a public figure. And eight organisations have won 'Golden Bull' booby prizes for gobbledygook.
Mr. Rumsfeld said in a press briefing, 'Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.'
Campaign spokesman John Lister said, 'We think we know what he means. But we don't know if we really know...'<p>From www.plainenglish.com

Oh, I knew larrikin (I'm a fan of Thomas Keneally) ... it was Latham I was talking about. He made the Daily Telegraph in London today, and will feature on one of my pages tomorrow, for the general edification of our readership.<p>[ December 02, 2003: Message edited by: RimRat ]</p>

Why doesn't it surprise me that both gentlemen would be interested in a collision sport played without protective headgear?<p>Poem was all right, though. I can't make up my mind whether I prefer Keneally's fiction or non-fiction.
