In the boys' club that is independent record store ownership, a fine line separates the ultracool from the megageeky. Stores either fail quickly after initial bombast or seep their way into the semi- permanent niches of a city's marginal subculture, becoming institutions in their own right. Chris X and his Reptilian Records store and label, celebrating 14 years in Baltimore this weekend, can claim the latter with relative impunity.
"I came down from Philly in 1989 to visit this girl I was dating that went to MICA," X says. "And I asked her where all the cool record stores were, and there weren't any."

Reptilian Records Celebrates 14 Years of Being Punk as Fuck
OK, it's nice to see one of my buddies getting good press, but their habit of calling him "X" on second reference makes my eyes want to bleed. This editor would treat his name like a solid coinage, i.e. "Chris X" on every reference. I wonder if the BCP calls Big Boi from Outkast "Boi" on second reference. Yuck.
[ December 01, 2003: Message edited by: zenobia ]
