How many of you really don't like what you do? I like copy editing and reporting, but keep getting saddled with bosses with zero patience. I am in school, but I string and proofread with a small paper. Is this just par for the course working for a daily?
I am almost tempted to get out of it. What's the consensus?

Well, one can't make general statements, but if you're a good copy editor but not a fast one, perhaps a daily is not the best fit for you.
There will always be some tight deadlines anywhere, but some editors find the constand demand for quick turnaround on dailys so stressful that it's hard to enjoy the work. Perhaps a weekly or monthly periodical would be a better fit if you don't care for speed-freak bosses.

I've been at my daily for 5 1/2 years now and, for the most part, enjoy it. Sure, there's always a few crappy days/nights mixed in with the good, but that's to be expected. Such is life, or, I'm Too Jaded to Get My Hypertension and Blood Sugar Worked Up Over It Most of the Time.
Gatekeeper
-30-

It'd be easier to determine "par" if you cited an example of your bosses' lack of patience.

I am still rather astonished that I get paid for work I love so much. That said, sometimes you have to move town, go interstate or migrate to get out of a rut..

I love this work.
I also love bitching about this work. Without the bitching, it's not as much fun.

Susan:
I worked in a place where there was a copy editor who carried a pistol in a holster on his calf when he worked on the wire desk rim every day. Whenever I get angry enough to shoot someone, I think of him.
Eventually, he was told not to wear the pistol to work anymore; while he did indeed have a permit to carry it, apparently some tight-ass had made a rule years before that forbid employees from carrying deadly weapons on the job.
All I know is that I was careful how I phrased any comments about his work.

I have even less patience with this shit than those bosses do. Just do the work, WordDemon. Or go ahead & get out, to better pursue that Elysian field in which bosses are a pleasure to have around.
