Lord Black of Cross Harbour, in trouble over a mere $32 million in dubious payments (to his lordship and other Hollinger executives), tells the CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation] that it was just a matter of "underdocumented payments that were commercially justified." He says the payments were not handled properly and blamed "underlings."
If folks who can cut $32 million in cheques for Conrad are "underlings" what does that make the folks who toil in the newsrooms of his media empire?
I heard the interview and could hardly believe my ears. I didn't think anyone referred to "underlings" any more. Sounds like a completely different species.
Can't say how glad I am he renounced his Canadian citizenship. Would hate to have to claim him as one of ours.

Is underling a step up from lackey? Then I'd like to be an underling.

I think it is a matter of perspective. "Lackeys" are observed from outside as snivelling hangers-on, but the person they are subservient to may not see them that way, but rather as esteemed colleagues.
However, when one refers to ones own "underlings" it's pretty clear where he fits them in the scheme of things.

So... where does "news room peasant" fit in? Under lackey or underpaid?
