The New York Times tells me:
A High-Risk Film on the High Seas
By ANNE THOMPSON
Every once in a while a Hollywood studio throws out the hit-formula playbook and bets that smart moviegoers will go along for the ride. "Master and Commander" is that rare case.
It's a f*ckin PIRATE movie! Starring Russell F. Crowe!
"Master and Commander" eschews more Hollywood conventions than most such megabudget epics. The film even goes so far as to leave a love interest out of the story ...
It's a f**kin PIRATE movie! It's a boat full of love interests, even without the pretty girls.
This is a mission movie like `Lawrence of Arabia' or `The Hunt for Red October.' " The relationship between Maturin and Aubrey is pivotal. ... That dynamic between them is appealing to women; it's like Butch and Sundance."
All the while, eschewing convention, right? And not to ruin the ending of the movie or the article, but it turns out what really is groundbreaking, the NYT reports, is the studio's PR effort behind the film, which, turns out, is a pirate movie.

For all intents and purposes it is. And the head of the studio thinks it is. Then again, such a groundbreaking, unconventional masterpiece probably defies categorization.

As Tallulah Bankhead (or Dorothy Parker) might have said:
"Are you the young man who doesn't know how to spell 'fucking'?"

Mr. Money is correct, as usual. No "high-risk" movie makes the cover of Time magazine BEFORE its release. "Eraserhead" was a high-risk movie. So was "Midnight Cowboy." So was "Reservoir Dogs." But if "Master and Commander" is a high-risk movie, the New York Times is an underground newspaper.
[ November 14, 2003: Message edited by: ShiningPath ]
