Since I assume most of you are quite indentured into your careers, what is the deal on level of experience with layout.
Do most dailies REQUIRE you to be really good at Quark or InDesign?

They require me to use Quark. Thankfully, they don't require me to be really good at it.

We use DT where I work, and layout is part of the daily, er, nightly routine. It's better than the old cut-and-paste system, IMO, although it's really irritating when DT crashes and one loses five minutes having to reboot.
Gatekeeper
-30-

The basics of Quark are relatively simple.
The key thing is to latch on to how your particular office likes things built, so that changes can be easily made by another user.
Major papers in Australia use a system called Cyberpage, designed specifically for newspapers, that simplifies the process even further.
That frees us up to concentrate on design fundamentals and news values, rather than program esoterica.

The size of the paper and the type of job you apply for typically dictates how much layout experience you need. At smaller papers, you need to have more versatility. At larger papers, I've heard most people either copy edit or lay out pages, not both. At my work, making deadline seems to be the most important part of my job, so knowing how to lay out pages quickly is quite handy.
