Image
The Sun-Times staff was told in a memo from management yesterday that designers "developed a new nameplate for The Sun-Times that will give our front page more contemporary appeal and more gravity."

I think I hear Charles Foster Kane in the background and he's saying a bigger headline makes bigger news. And we all know what happened to him. Well, many of us.

The crooked hyphen is a touch of pure design genius.

Why isn't the gravity of the nameplate keeping the zipper from going down?

In a telephone interview, Editor in Chief Michael Cooke combined pride in the result with a certain reluctance to discuss the redesign: "Do I want to talk about it? No. The reason we did it this way -- without fanfare, without leading off with brass bands -- is because we wanted a redesign by stealth. Most redesigns piss off readers." (Editor & Publisher)
***He's right about that, at least to the degree that readers notice "redesigns." ***

The nameplate is as classically elegant as the building it comes out of.
