This gets my vote for the year's most stupid-ass excuse for a story:
BC-Hogwarts Headaches, HFR,0428
By XXXXXX
Associated Press Writer
Has the latest Harry Potter fantasy cast a spell of “Hogwarts headaches” on some of its most avid readers?
A pediatrician says he had three otherwise healthy children complain of headaches for two to three days last summer. It turns out all had been reading the 870-page “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” in marathon sessions.

Stupid doesn't begin. Well, yeah, it does begin. ... It ends at the paper for which I work, which is putting this lame story on A1.

It's another one of those stories that cannot withstand even the lightest scrutiny yet will be run in hundreds of newspapers and talked about on hundreds of stupid morning radio programs.
Three alleged victims.
The tipoff in this ridiculous story is: "Just keeping writing great books. I wouldn't dream of giving her advice," said Bennett, who is the author of medical humor books.
What a riot!

An addendum. I thought for awhile saner heads would prevail here. The Potter story was bumped off A1 Wednesday night by something at least marginally resembling real news.
Of course, I was wrong about the sanity thing: They skyboxed it.
Your local newspaper, striking a blow for literacy everywhere.

It looks like a lot of editors weren't thinking very clearly that day.

Is that twice in the same day in the Washington Post?

I nearly choked on my coffee when I encountered it on A3. Ugh!
[ November 01, 2003: Message edited by: SusanV ]
