Daniel Okrent, a longtime magazine editor and author who has served as managing editor of Life and editor of Time Inc.'s new media operations, has been appointed the first public editor of The New York Times. ...
Mr. Okrent's only experience in a newspaper newsroom was a brief stint as a copy boy at The Detroit Free Press. But he said the absence of such experience would not prove a hindrance in his new position.
<p>***Yes, it will.***

Well, yes, he does make a good point. But I bet Dan's "personal copy editor" is not, by a long shot, the only copy editor in the world forbidden to make any substantive changes in copy.

When I was starting out in this caper, my managing editor insisted I make as many changes to his copy as needed. His articles went for typesetting unchanged, apart from an added headline. The process illustrates two basics the boss believed in:
1) Clean copy saves heartache.
2) Sometimes, the secret of power is not to use it.
