Copy editors nationwide just got over the argument over puns and here it comes again. <p>I think the best way to decide whether to indulge is to run the idea through a list of don'ts. Don't try: schools
computers
most electricial devices, including telephones
banks ... <p>unless you have something you're completely sure is original, and<p>don't even think about it in cases of health, death, and religion, and don't do proper names unless you write for sports and the idea is overwhelming.<p>Remember that a "perfect" pun, equally meaningful in either reading, is what you ought to be trying for, and that sometimes descriptive, or even indignant language, will work out better than wordplay.<p>When it doubt, just tell 'em as clearly and completely as possible what the story is about, and move on. There's always another comma to delete.
