An article describing the changes will appear in tomorrow's paper.
***That'll be a gripping read.***

¶Bookman, a lighter-weight family, will be replaced by Times Cheltenham Book. Bookman remains the headline type for The Times's feature sections except the magazine, but the Cheltenham will replace it in the coming months.
***I'm waiting to hear why it couldn't be done all at once.***

You have to admit that it's a radical change.

If you're going to fiddle with the typefaces, just do it. It's not like we need a Miami Herald-esque map to find our way around the new Times front page.
[ October 21, 2003: Message edited by: blanp ]

Good news...for readers. Bad news...for copy editors, because the switch to Cheltenham gives us less room to write the fabled "A" heads. Look for lots of little words.
But overall, not bad. Not certain why we had to announce it, though. Seems like it's just an invitation for readers to gripe. As for why it can't be done all at once...our news sections are still on Atex, others are on bug-infested CCI; not sure what the mag. uses. It can be tricky to get the kerning and leading exactly right across platforms.

Designwise, I really like the Muhammad photo above the Congo story.

It's nice to see them side by side. That way I'm able to tell that I like the old fonts better (not that there's much difference). The one exception is the change from Bookman Antique to Times Cheltenham Book, but I just have something against Bookman.
I miss the sans serif, and that probably says something about me.

On the Times' site, they have this to say atop the image of the front page:
"To reduce download time, this page has been scanned at a resolution that makes the headlines and photos legible but not the body type."
Why the hell would they scan something created on a computer? (Sorry, just being testy.)

(I know that "CCI" and "fixed" don't go together well.)***
